good polish place with great location
(4.0/5)
Stash moved from St-Sulpice street when it burned down a couple of years ago and some say it has changed but not for the best. Not having been there before, I wouldn't know. The restaurant is very warm and confortable and is located in an old restored building in old Montreal (you should check out the bathrooms - through the door in the back and up the stairs - just to snoop around the building, the smell of wood and old stones is great). There are many individual choices on the menu but there's also a beginner's menu : for a little less than $20, you get five services : a soup (borsht - it was a little clear, it was more like a purple broth and didn't taste much like beets), a salad (pretty ordinary), the main dish with four selections (the pierogies and the stew were good, the potato pancake and the krokieties were excellent), a dessert (peach tart - excellent) and coffee or tea. The price seemed high for the whole thing since the first two services were quite ordinary, so an order of krokieties and potato pancakes with dessert would be less expensive and as enjoyable.<br>
That last visit was in 1996, I returned for lunch recently (1998) and the decor is still the same (why fix something that is definitely not broken) but the prices are still higher than average. I ordered the krokieties (ok, I'll tell what they are, they are crepes stuffed with ground beef, tighly rolled and fried so the outside is crispy, then there's a layer of moist crepe and the ground beef in the middle - excellent!) which came with some potato salad (also excellent, with lot's of fennel) and a green salad (much better that the last time, not more iceberg lettuce and more variety). But two little krokieties and small portion of salads for $7.50 before taxes is a little higher than you would pay for a lunch special, especially since there was no soup or entree. You can find cheaper elsewhere (Mazurka on Prince-Arthur street east for example), but the presentation is not as attractive. Still, good food and great decor makes it worth while.
